Facts About Preterm Labour

By Dr. Seema Wadhwa, MD – Associate Director, Gynaecology, Max Hospital, Mohali Preterm labour, also known as premature labour, occurs when uterine contractions begin before 37 weeks of pregnancy (between 24 to 37 weeks). These contractions cause the cervix to open earlier than normal, leading to early childbirth.

Why Preterm Labour Is a Serious Concern

Preterm labour is concerning because the baby is often not mature enough to survive independently outside the womb. The most common challenge faced by preterm babies is underdeveloped lungs, which may require ventilatory or NICU support, depending on the baby’s gestational age.

Premature babies are also more sensitive to the stress of labour and require delivery in a tertiary care maternity unit equipped with advanced neonatal and intensive care facilities to ensure the best outcomes.

Immediate Medical Attention Is Essential

If a woman shows signs of preterm labour, she must be immediately shifted to a higher medical centre with neonatal intensive care support. Timely intervention can make a critical difference to the baby’s survival and long-term health.

At our facility, we provide comprehensive and holistic care for such high-risk cases, with round-the-clock availability of paediatricians and anaesthetists. This ensures not only the safety of the mother and baby but also the possibility of painless deliveries with complete medical supervision.

Common Causes of Preterm Labour

Several factors can increase the risk of preterm labour, including:

  • Twin or multiple pregnancies

  • Internal uterine haemorrhages

  • Excess amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios)

  • Cervical incompetence (when the cervix opens too early)

  • Certain infections affecting the uterus or reproductive tract

Early Diagnosis and Timely Action

Recognizing early symptoms and seeking medical help promptly is vital. Do not ignore or try to manage preterm pains at home. Visit a higher medical centre as soon as possible for evaluation, monitoring, and appropriate treatment.
